For a couple of minutes, Tamsin had contemplated the idea of just opening up Town Hall for the party, but... what would be the point in that? People were fired up on hormones, people wanted to get laid, you needed a space small enough to get 'em close together. So to speak.

Also, this way she got free booze out of the deal, so-- win win.

She'd hung the black sheets back in front of the large store windows (partly to keep the light out, partly so it was slightly less obvious the house was technically a shop she was technically maybe squatting in). She'd tossed a ton of pillows and an old mattress on the floor, since she didn't actually have a sofa, per sé. The rooms upstairs were... well, okay, they were rooms.

And there was a table for incoming booze. With solo cups. Of course.

Perfect. Time for a party. If anyone had seen the posters...

"I may be dead, but I still have eyes," Allie replied with a wry grin. "And it beats climbing the walls at my place. Vampire or not, I still feel it, just like you do."

"Come to do some window shopping, then?" Éponine laughed. "I tried to go for a walk, but it didn't do any good, and it isn't as if I don't have time to . . . think about things when I'm running around all day as it is."

Given the way Allie's head was turning, she was definitely checking out the merchandise. "At least there's a possibility for you to be distracted during the day. Do you know how quiet the nights are around here now that it's so cold?"

Éponine wrinkled her nose. "I've some idea. It's got to be awfully lonely. Well, I don't blame you at all for being here in that case."

"The teal deer have no problem listening to me talk. They just don't talk back." And if they ever did, that might be the day Allie considered leaving the island.

"So what else have you been up to?"

"They had better not talk back," Éponine said immediately, so if that ever happened she'd be right behind Allie fleeing the island. "Good lord, I hardly remember what I've been doing any more. I can barely think at all this week, and it's hard to work like that."

"I have to work tomorrow. With Tiny." Allie rolled her eyes, already anticipating a very long night. "I might have to lock him in the storage closet."

Éponine grimaced in sympathy. "Maybe you ought to just lock him up in there anyway." Sometimes she was kind of awful. "How much longer is this supposed to last?"

Because it was fun and all, but after a while it was just damned inconvenient.

It was Tiny. Awful was kind of allowed.

"I'm hoping it'll be over by the weekend. Otherwise I'm seriously considering getting the hell out of town for a while."

"I may go with you in that case," Éponine muttered. "We can't be expected to live like this for long, it's maddening and it's stupid. I can't even read for a few minutes before I start thinking about -- other things."

"You could read about those other things," Allie pointed. "Although I honestly can't be sure if that helps or hurts at this point."

"It isn't any better," grumbled Éponine. "I've a book due back to the library next week, and I'll never finish it at this rate."

Because even under these circumstances she cared about that. She couldn't even get five pages in before getting too distracted to concentrate, and SHE JUST WANTED TO FIND OUT HOW IT ENDED. Like sexual frustration wasn't bad enough.

"Well if we're lucky it'll end this weekend and you'll be able focus on it without any interruptions."

But of course Allie had to ask, "What's it about anyway?"

Éponine smiled crookedly. "English navy officers from something a bit like my time, only with dragons. Sometimes I think I'd like a dragon of my own, but then I think, no, I could never afford to keep it fed, not one like in these books. And where would I keep it?"

"Who said it had to be a big dragon? Maybe it could be tiny one?" Allie suggested. "That would be a little easier to take care of."

And then she could ask Kitty for advice!

"Bigger or smaller than my cat?" she had to ask, grateful for at least a few minutes of perfectly innocent conversation.

"I think it would depend on the cat. Too big, it would eat the cat. Too small, the cat would eat it."

Yup cling to the innocent small talk. Right up until something or someone distracting walked on by.

"There are a whole lot of pretty people on this island."

"Yes, and it isn't fair." What? Éponine figured she had the right to whine at least a little bit. "How do any of us get anything done?"
